CVUUF Social Action Guide

The Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (CVUUF) and its members are actively involved in a wide array of social justice issues. The purpose of this guide is to give you an introduction to our activities, initiatives and partners \(both local and through the UUA or UUSC\).

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC)

Through a combination of advocacy, education and partnerships with grassroots organizations, UUSC supports programs and policies that empower women, defend the rights of children and support the struggles of indigenous people and oppressed racial and ethnic groups. The UUSC also provides financial and technical support when disasters strike impoverished areas.

With more than 25,000 members and supporters, the UUSC is a nonsectarian organization that promotes human rights and social justice worldwide. They maintain partnerships in the United States, South and Southeast Asia, Central Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Their programs are based on Unitarian Universalist principles that affirm the worth, dignity and human rights of every person - but one need not be a Unitarian Universalist to join UUSC.

To aid others outside our immediate community, the CVUUF Social Action Committee strongly encourages all friends and members to support the UUSC through membership and generous contributions. Thanks to the percentage of our members that also belong to the UUSC, the CVUUF has earned the "Vision of Justice" award for the last 3 years. We are considered an Honor Congregation since 10-19% of our overall membership belongs to the UUSC.

Every December, CVUUF participates in UUSC's Guest At Your Table program. This very special annual contribution program helps members understand the work of the Service Committee and teaches them about our partners around the globe. Guest at Your Table is UUSC's most visible program for congregational involvement. Each year, every member household is asked to take a Guest at Your Table box and brochure home and contribute money to the box at mealtime over a four-week period. All monies collected benefit UUSC's programs.

The CVUUF Board of Directors voted to congregationally support the UUSC by being a James Luther Adams Congregation. Starting with the 2001 budget, CVUUF will contribute $1 per member to the UUSC organization.

UUSC : Theodora Davitt-Cornyn is the Associated District Representative (ADR) for the Pacific Southwest District (PSWD) to the UUA. She is also on the executive board of the UUSC.
