On Sunday, November 18 during service time, we painted and glazed ceramic bowls. We worked with partners, preferably a child and an adult, but it coule be two adults or two children. We talked about those in our community or in the world who do not have much and scrape by on a meager existence of one meal a day, that pretty much fits in this bowl. We are so fortunate to be in a loving community, filled with great abundance. At this time of thanksgiving we have much to be thankful for. This service is a reminder that we are blessed, in spirit, resources and community.
The second part of this service was on Sunday, November 25 and takes place after service. We shared a meal of a scoop of rice, a scoop of beans and a tortilla. This is a standard daily meal of many people. To provide a further spiritual experience, we asked all able-bodied adults over the age of 18 to let this be their only meal of the day. At this time we also asked for donations to purchase the bowls we made, for $15.00 a piece. The money collected (after costs) was given to Ventura County Food Share to be disbursed to those in need throughout the county, including Manna.
Spiritual work is a complicated and life-long process. It takes on many forms. Once we realize that, a host of new experiences and possibilities are open to us.
Yours in faith,
Justine
